Kaiou Michiru

One of the first Outer Senshi to appear, Michiru seems to be the "perfect" person. Pretty, intelligent, and talented, Michiru has class. She is a year older than the Inners, and goes to a different school, but fate brings them together. She is the feminine half of the Michiru-Haruka equation. Oh, her one weakness..... Michiru has an obsession for lipstick.

Information

Michiru has the power to transform into Sailor Neptune. With the help of various henshin phrases, she can become Sailor Neptune, Super Sailor Neptune, and Eternal Sailor Neptune. She holds the talisman, the Aqua Mirror. Even though she is part of the Outer Senshi, Michiru's partner is Haruka.

The naming scheme for the Outer Senshi is slightly different from that of the Inners. Michiru's name means rising sea king (michiru kai ou). It refers to her ability to manipulate the ocean in order to fuel her attacks. Note: this is not that same power that Ami has; Ami controls water in general.

Sailor Moon S, the season that features the Outer Senshi has been dubbed and aired. In it, Michiru was changed to Michelle. The obvious reason for this choice is the names' similarity. Another change that directly affects Michiru's characterization is the decision to make her and Haruka cousins. Needless to say, they are not cousins; they are lovers (no Prince Uranus theory here).

According to the RPG, Michiru's gemstone is aquamarine. Aquamarine is a blue-ish, sea-green stone. Her color is either teal or green, and her birthday is March 6.

Uranus attacks

Tenou Haruka

Haruka is the other Tuxedo Kamen..... yes, her first appearance in the manga was as "a" Tuxedo Kamen alongside Sailor Neptune. After that, she begins to appear as Sailor Uranus. Haruka has an androgynous look that confuses those around her, and which she uses for her own amusement. She enjoys flirting with girls, especially Usagi. In the manga, she does kiss Usagi (this event is sometimes mistakenly attributed to the anime). Another misconception is that manga Haruka is a hermaphrodite. What was meant by the comment that Haruka is both male and female is that she combines the typical male and female characteristics in one body. It's a reference to her mental and emotional makeup, not her physical appearance. In the Michiru-Haruka equation, Haruka is the male aspect.

Information

Haruka has the power to transform into Sailor Uranus. With the help of various henshin phrases, she can become Sailor Uranus, Super Sailor Uranus, and Eternal Sailor Neptune. She holds the talisman, the Space Sword. Even though she is part of the Outer Senshi, Michiru is Haruka's partner.

The naming scheme for the Outer Senshi is slightly different from that of the Inners. Haruka's name means distant heaven ruler (haruka ten ou). However, Haruka's attacks deal more with moving the earth.

Sailor Moon S, the season that features the Outer Senshi, has been dubbed and aired. In the dub, Haruka's name is changed to Amara. There seems to be no logic to this change; indeed, Amara is as foreign-sounding as Haruka. The only reason I can think of is that Amara might sound more feminine than Haruka, which leads to the next change. Haruka is not Michiru's cousin; she is Michiru's lover. And there is no Prince Uranus.

According to the RPG, amber is Haruka's gemstone. Her color is blue and her birthday is January 27.

Pluto swings her Garnet rod

Meiou Setsuna

The Senshi of Time is a solitary soldier, guarding the doors of time. She has a special affection for Small Lady, the little princess of Crystal Tokyo. While Setsuna may seem cold and detached because of her lonely job, she really has a big heart. This is evident in the very beginning of Act 23, when Sailor Pluto stops time, even though it means forfeiting her own life. Protecting the royal family of Crystal Tokyo and the Senshi of the past is more important to her than her own life. Later on, we see this caring maternal side of Setsuna when she and Michiru and Haruka raise baby Hotaru.

Information

Setsuna has the power to transform into Sailor Pluto. With the help of various henshin phrases, she can become Sailor Pluto, Super Sailor Pluto, and Eternal Sailor Pluto. She holds the Garnet Orb talisman atop her staff. She is a "special case" Senshi (the others are Sailor Moon, Sailor Chibi Moon, Tuxedo Kamen, and Sailor Saturn). Just as Double Moon and Tuxedo Kamen are ultimately destined to rule Crystal Tokyo, and Sailor Saturn was destined to be the solider of destruction, Sailor Pluto has a pre-set destiny of her own: to guard the Gates of Time.

The naming scheme for the Outer Senshi is slightly different from that of the Inner Senshi. Setsuna's name corresponds more to her Greek mythological counterpart, Hades. Hades was the dark god of the Olympians, the ruler of the Underworld. While Setsuna is far from the keeper of souls, she is the darkest Senshi, both in task and physical nature (she has the darkest skin). Her name means momentary dark king (setsuna mei ou).

While Sailor Pluto appears in Sailor Moon R, Setsuna is featured first in Sailor Moon S. The CWI dub gives her name as Trista, a name change that is seemingly meaningless. Trista means "sad" in Spanish, but Setsuna does not appear to be sad and gloomy at all times; she is more mysterious.

Setsuna's birthday is on October 29, her color is maroon, and her gemstone is the garnet.

Saturn swings her Silence Glaive

Tomoe Hotaru

Hotaru is the most misunderstood of the Senshi. Originally, she is to be the Senshi of silence, the destroyer of the world. Her coming is feared by all. In the manga, she does destroy the world after her spirit is awaken in Hotaru. However, she is not evil just because she is the anti-Messiah (Messiah is used in a non-religious context; I use it to mean the chosen one, Sailor Moon). Her goal in destroying the world is to get rid of the evil brought by the Death Busters, and to purify the land for the future Crystal Tokyo. She knows that Super Sailor Moon can resurrect the world; and so she brings down the silence glaive. Afterwards, she is reborn as baby Hotaru to have a proper reawakening as Sailor Saturn and to serve her queen.

Information

Hotaru has the power to transform into Sailor Saturn. She requires no henshin phrase to become Sailor Saturn or Super Sailor Saturn; both times she transforms as a result of an awakening. Only to become Eternal Sailor Saturn does she use a henshin phrase.

The naming scheme for the Outer Senshi is slightly different from that of the Inner Senshi. Hotaru's name means firefly rising from the earth (hotaru moe to). This could possibly refer to her multiple rebirths.

Lo and behold, Hotaru is Hotaru in the CWI dub! I think CWI decided to keep her name because, of all the Outers, Hotaru is the one who can "pass" as Japanese with her dark hair and eyes. Therefore, she could stay as Hotaru (her last name is mispronounced as "toe-moe" instead of "toe-moe-ay"). The major flaw in this line of thinking is that manga/anime characters are not supposed to look like any nationality.

Hotaru's color is purple (not black as popularly thought), and her birthday is January 6.
